This class will be about the effects of language. Poetry, spoken monologues, subtext with photography, dialogue, lyric and prose are all included in the mix. We will look at the difference between written and performance texts. We will learn to reconcile writing that is to be published and that’s to be made to be heard-two forms thought to be mutually exclusive. Artists will be required to write their own work.
We will study artists who have used words in their art such as Barbara Kruger, Jenny Holzer, and David Wognarowicz. Manuscripts and speeches of writers, artists and leaders such as Allen Ginsberg and Martin Luther King will also be read and studied.
This course will count toward general education requirements for TSOA students (Humanities). Students must be of Sophmore and above class standing to be eligible to take Art and Public Policy courses.
