The Kanbar Institute of film and Television at Tisch School of the Arts educates students in the art, craft, and technology of film, television, video, animation, and sound production. The program offers intensive, hands-on production experience coupled with a broad exposure to the liberal arts.
Sight and Sound: Film 7 points
The Spring at Tisch film production track centers around Sight and Sound Film, a beginning-level 16 mm production workshop in which students complete five short black-and-white films over the semester. Working in a crew of four, students rotate positions so each person receives hands-on experience and exposure to all aspects of filmmaking. This is a required course for all Tisch film majors, and visiting spring students work alongside degree students in this workshop environment. Students must also register for Tech Theory Film (1 point).
Elective Credits 5-11 points
On acceptance to the program, students are sent a directory of courses available during the spring semester. Students should immerse themselves in the intense study of film and complement their production work with classes in cinema history and other aspects of the filmmaking process. The Language of Film, which offers an overview of film history, development, and aesthetics (see Cinema Studies), and Developing the Screenplay (Goldberg Department of Dramatic Writing), which provides beginning-level screenwriting instruction with an emphasis on student work, are recommended.
